Resident Evil 2

Resident Evil 2

Game Pass tier required: Standard
Playable on: Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S

We think Resident Evil 2 is quite possibly the best Resident Evil game ever made, and the 2019 remake made it even better. Try to survive Racoon City in the midst of a zombie outbreak as either Claire Redfield of Leon Kennedy, all the while being pursued by the mysterious Mr. X. There’s one thing for sure: there are scares aplenty. This is not only one of the best horror games on Xbox Game Pass, it’s one of the best horror games ever made.

The Evil Within 2

The Evil Within 2

Game Pass tier required: Standard
Playable on: Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S

We absolutely loved The Evil Within, but we can’t help but feel like this sequel improved on it in every single way. With a more open-world structure, guide Detective Sebastian Castellanos through a nightmare, where he’ll come face-to-face with grotesque creatures and more. The Evil Within 2 really deserves your attention if you’re after the best horror games on Xbox Game Pass. We just hope a third game in the series is announced soon.

Dead Island 2

Dead Island 2

Game Pass tier required: Ultimate
Playable on: Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S

We waited years upon years for Dead Island 2, and when it finally arrived it didn’t disappoint. That’s why it’s made its way onto our list of the best horror games on Xbox Game Pass. Trapped in LA, can you fight your way out and survive a zombie apocalypse? Whatever happens, it’s equally scary and fun to try, but it’s the game’s gore system that’s really the highlight here, repulsing you at every turn.

Dead Space

Dead Space remake

Game Pass tier required: Ultimate
Playable on: Xbox Series X/S

The original Dead Space is a horror classic. And while it isn’t all that old, EA has deemed it appropriate for the remake treatment. You won’t find us complaining, especially when the results are as good as the 2023 version of Dead Space, which remains faithful to the source for the most part but expands on it in numerous ways and improves the gameplay. Ultimately, it’s one of the best horror games of recent years, and it’s included in Xbox Game Pass Ultimate.

The Callisto Protocol

The Callisto Protocol

Game Pass tier required: Standard
Playable on: Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S

Created by Glen Schofield, one of the minds behind the original Dead Space, it should come as no surprise that The Callisto Protocol bears some similarities. They’re both set in space, for example, and their enemies are similarly grotesque. There’s much more of an emphasis on melee combat in The Callisto Protocol, however, which makes for many tense close-combat encounters. In any case, if you love horror games, this is well worth giving a try.

Still Wakes the Deep

Still Wakes the Deep

Game Pass tier required: Ultimate
Playable on: Xbox Series X/S

Set on an offshore oil rig in the 1970s, Still Wakes the Deep puts you in the shoes of a simple electrician. Initially all you have to worry about is your boss being mad at you for some reason, but then things seriously take a turn for the worse, with something supernatural seemingly finding its way aboard. Wonderfully cinematic and featuring some great performances, Still Wakes the Deep is a must-play for fans of body horror.
